I was new to root canals, therefore extremely nervous and anxious. I have throat and coughing issues so was afraid of being numbed near my throat, I was just a bunch of worries. But Dr. Pratte put me immediately at ease. He listened to my concerns, he Heard them, and said he’d adjust accordingly. What I was expecting: pain during, discomfort and aching afterwards - None of it happened. I listened to music throughout and it was much quicker than I expected. And again, no pain! Aftercare was minimal. Dr Pratte was excellent and so was his nurse who answered all my panicky questions. It’s not like I’d ask for another root canal, but if you do need one, he’s your guy.

I've seen many dentists, many of them good and unfortunately a few bad ones too. Once you find a great dentist though, you hang onto them. I've been with my dentist for 17 years, 10+ of those years moved up to the Bay Area and making the 5-6hr commute back and forth.

Well, life happens and during my last check with Most Awesome General Dentist; turns out I need a root canal and was recommended to Dr. John Pratte as a "Diplomate" dentist. What is that? I asked a robot and this is what I learned:

Achieving diplomate status in dentistry, particularly for specialties like endodontics, is a prestigious accomplishment that represents the highest level of expertise in the field. Here's what it generally involves:

1. Advanced Education and Specialty Training: After earning a dental degree (e.g., DDS or DMD), a dentist must complete additional years of postgraduate training in their specialty, such as endodontics, periodontics, or orthodontics. This involves clinical, hands-on training and deep study of the specialty.

2. Board Certification: To become a diplomate, a dentist must pass rigorous board certification exams specific to their specialty. This typically includes:

Written Exam: Testing the candidate’s knowledge of all facets of their specialty.

Clinical Exam or Case Presentations: Submitting complex case studies or undergoing a practical exam to demonstrate hands-on expertise and problem-solving abilities in their specialty.

Oral Exam: Being questioned by a board of experts on clinical cases, treatment planning, and specialized knowledge to assess clinical judgment and expertise.

3. Experience and Case Portfolio: Many boards require candidates to complete and submit a portfolio of complex cases they’ve treated successfully, showcasing their proficiency and commitment to high standards of care.

4. Continuing Education and Recertification: Once they achieve diplomate status, many boards require ongoing continuing education and periodic recertification to ensure they remain up-to-date with advancements in their field.

5. Commitment to Excellence: Diplomates are often required to uphold strict ethical standards and demonstrate a commitment to advancing their specialty through research, teaching, or service within the professional community.

In short, becoming a diplomate is a mark of dedication, clinical excellence, and a deep commitment to providing the highest standard of patient care in their specialty. It signifies that the practitioner has gone well beyond the basic requirements of dental practice.

So I just want to say that I highly appreciate the expertly skilled precision of Dr. Pratte's deft and nimble hands. He has a very professional demeanor while also being quite warm and personable. (And those diplomate credentials tell you that you're getting the very best of the very best!!!)

Dr. Pratte and his team are the best. Root canals are not fun, but they are so good at what they do, that I felt totally comfortable and taken care of. I had to have one in a tooth with a crown and the crown remained in tact. He is very responsive with off hours help and knows what he's doing. Don't mess around with this procedure, get it done by someone who is well-experienced. And Dr. Pratte is that person.

Dr. Pratte helped me tremendously. He and his staff were so nice, so kind. This was my first root canal, and the procedure was less painful than a regular filling. I was so surprised! They worked me in, and even though it was late in the day, he and his staff were still so gracious and kind. His office runs well. I highly recommend Dr Pratte and his practice for Endodentistry (Root canals and extractions)!

I have had many root canals and dental procedures by a number of endodontists over the past 4 decades. Dr. Pratte is FAR AND AWAY the very best I have EVER encountered. His ability to diagnose complex problems quickly and easily (when others are confounded), his ability to do major procedures without the slightest discomfort, and the quality and longevity of his work confirms to me that he is the very best at what he does. Really. Seek him out. Pray that he does not retire!

He has a gentle touch and the office is warm & friendly. If you have to get a root canal...and I've had 7, this is the place to go!

I don't write reviews usually, but if you need to do root canal, this is the place to go. Anesthesia process was super easy for me, and it worked really well, I felt nothing literally. Only pain was the anesthesia, but it was 2 seconds. I'm lucky to have Dr.Pratte for my root canal. And staff in the clinic were super nice and friendly which helped me a lot also. The best!
